It’s a nice tune, and I would also agree it’s superior to Crow’s cover, which I like as well!
In general, the quality of Rod Stewart’s output has varied a lot over the decades. I definitely prefer the “old” rock and blues-oriented Rod with Jeff Beck, The Faces and his first 3-4 solo albums.
Stewart is one of a few artists who are blessed with a very cool and distinct voice. This makes even otherwise less impressive songs acceptable.
Other artists who come to my mind in this context are Tina Turner and Joe Cocker. They both ended up with less than stellar material in the late stages of their careers. But the way they delivered these songs always remained amazing.
