From 1982’s classic Nebraska, probably the most “upbeat” song on the album. There’s a bootleg album out there called Nebraska Live where Bruce in introducing this song, tells a hilarious story about having to go to traffic court and after listening the guy in front of him plead his case for why he was doing 60mph on a residential street (he was drunk and thought it was the highway!) and then its Bruce’s turn, he says “well, Judge…” and then rips into a great version of the song. Anyway, I digress. I used to love to blast this song on my car stereo on those nighttime commutes between DC and Philly.

Thanks for calling out that tune. If you imagine The E Street Band as a backup, it would have been a good fit for ”The River” or even the “Born In The U.S.A.” album.
I know many Springsteen fans consider “Nebraska” to be his crown jewel. To me, there’s too much darkness on that record, so I never warmed to it. I’m much more into “Born To Run” and “The River.” I also still like “Born In The U.S.A.,” even though many songs were completely overexposed on the radio at the time.

Thanks for the comment Christian. So the legend is that Bruce recorded alot of the songs that were on Nebraska and BUSA as acoustic demos. Then went into studio with E St Band to try them out and didnt feel the Nebraska stuff worked with the band, or wasn’t happy with it for whatever reason. So he then pulled the cassette tape with the demos out of his jean pockets and said “Can we just release these?” Imagine what his producers thought! Anyway, the Holy Grail for Bruce fans are those E St Band versions of the Nebraska tunes – Electric Nebraska – they apparently exist but interesting have never leaked into the bootleg world. Here’s hoping he’s realize them some day. He has subsequently played a number of them live in concert with the E St band. I would agree with my buddy Mike that my favorite version is the one he did with the Seeger Session Band on Live in Dublin – completely different arrangement – very uptempo.

Definitely agree that Nebraska not as accessible as some of his other albums – not an album I put on alot, really have to be in the mood for it, but when I am I find it one of his most powerful.
